Covid-19 Antibody Tests Available

Covid-19 antibody tests can tell a person whether their body has successfully fought Covid-19 coronavirus.

These tests are now available and are usually covered by insurance. The Covid antibody tests can help people get back to work in some situations.

What is a Covid-19 Antibody Test?

The Covid antibody tests look for antibodies that your immune system develops to fight SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus), the virus that causes COVID-19. Antibody tests can show if a person has been previously infected with COVID-19.

So far, 12 antibody tests have been authorized under an EUA. More than 200 tests are being reviewed for emergency authorization.

At our local Brooklyn urgent care centers, WeHealth uses the Diazyme DZ-Lite SARS-CoV-2 IgM and IgG CLIA Kits.

Why Get a Covid-19 Antibody Test

Combined with RT-qPCR, SARS-CoV-2 serological antibody tests offer a valuable diagnostic tool in identifying whether you have been infected.

According to recent studies, SARS-CoV-2 antibodies are not detectable before 3 days after onset of symptoms (or at least 7 to 10 days after infection)

However, antibody tests can detect past infection because virus-specific antibodies can persist in the blood for several weeks/months after onset of symptoms.

Some employers are using these tests as a basis for returning to work.

An antibody test looks for the presence of antibodies, which are specific proteins made in response to infections. Antibodies can be found in the blood of people who are tested after infection and show that people have had an immune response to the infection. Antibody test results are especially important for detecting previous infections with few or no symptoms.
